Though his critics say he has relatively less experience in monetary issues, his stint at Sebon, the regulator of the country\u2019s securities market, is expected to be useful for running the central bank.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">As the new governor, Nepal has a big challenge to continue the legacy of his predecessor Yubaraj Khatiwada, who is credited for maintaining financial stability in banks and financial institutions (BFIs) from alarming loan exposure to real estate sector and problems related to corporate governance.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">Former Finance Secretary Rameshore Khanal said the new governor should continue most of the policies adopted by his predecessor, including the cap on real estate lendings, direct lending policy on hydropower, agriculture and other productive sectors.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">\u201cAs the real estate sector continues to be a thorn in financial stability in many countries, the lending in the sector must be supervised properly,\u201d said Khanal, who had also worked as a director on the NRB board. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">Khanal suggested that the new governor should establish a mechanism at the central bank to forecast factors that could affect the financial system and devise policies to avert crisis. \u201cInterest rate corridor for better regulation of interest rate in the market, policies that enhance increased access to finance in the rural areas and implementation of service fee-related directive should also be given priority,\u201d Khanal added.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">BFIs\u2019 massive loan exposure to the real estate sector was one of the biggest challenges that Khatiwada had faced when he took over the central bank reins five years ago. On top of loan exposure, slow growth in remittance\u2014the lifeline for the country\u2019s economy\u2014is another big challenge facing the new governor.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">A former NRB deputy governor said that the central bank chief would have to deal with a slow growth in remittance despite rise in the number of migrant workers. \u201cAlthough the use of remittance for gold smuggling has been blamed for the slowdown, it may not be the only contributing factor,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">Gold might have been smuggled into India but the country does not have stack of India currency, which suggests there might be other factors responsible for the sluggish remittance growth. \u201cGrowing capital flight from the country is another challenge facing the new governor,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cA lower interest rate in the banking sector has led to the growing capital flight from the country.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">According him, there has been a growing trend among businessmen to take short term loans and deposit the amount in India at a higher interest.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">Former governor Dipendra Bahadur Kshetry said that maintaining corporate governance would continue to pose a challenge to the new governor.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">\u201cReports are swirling that some of the central bank officials themselves have been involved in promoting bad governance for personal benefits,\u201d said Kshetry. \u201cThe new governor should maintain strong discipline in the central bank.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"background:rgb(255,255,255);border:0;box-sizing:border-box;color:#272727;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;line-height:1.8em;margin-bottom:15px;margin-right:41px;outline:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;\">As the government\u2019s main economic advisor, his every move will be followed closely.
